Phase 4: Full scale CCS (2017 - 2025)
The purpose of the Phase 4 pilot project is to demonstrate full scale carbon capture at the local coal fuelled power plant and to use the captured CO2 as a medium for storage. This completes the Long- yearbyen CO2 lab concept.
The concept also includes long term monitoring of the sub surface developments (5-10 years or more).
The work has already started to identify capture technologies that can be adapted to the Longyearbyen power plant. Most likely, post combustion capture will be applied.
Construction of a capture plant will not start until the storage abilities and qualities have been determined.
All in all the Longyearbyen CO2 lab concept covers demonstration, research, monitoring and education. University level courses will be developed along the entire value chain
