Hanne H. Christiansen - Researching the thermal state of the permafrost

We study the thermal state of the permafrost as part of the CO2 project to obtain basic information, which allows us to assess the potential sealing capacity of the permafrost in a future CO2 ground storage here in Svalbard. These studies are linked to the Permafrost Observatory Project: A Contribution to the thermal state of permafrost in Norway and Svalbard (TSP Norway) IPY research project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council (here link to TSP Norway website: www.tspnorway.com). For the permafrost to act as a seal it would need to be ice rich and without taliks (unfrozen zones), therefore we need to investigate the ice content in drill cores as some of the future CO2 permafrost project activities.
